What is a bandsaw?

A power tool designed for cutting various materials, primarily wood, metal or plastic, a bandsaw has a toothed metal blade that is stretched between two wheels, one of which is typically powered.

The blade moves in a continuous loop, allowing for precision cutting in straight lines, curves or irregular shapes.

What is a bandsaw used for?

Largely used in woodworking, where it excels at making straight cuts, curved shapes and intricate patterns in wood, the bandsaw is indispensable in fabrication, carpentry and manufacturing settings.

Ranging from basic rip cuts to complex contours, their ability to handle diverse cutting tasks makes bandsaws an essential tool for both professionals and hobbyists seeking project accuracy and versatility.

How do I use a bandsaw?

  • Choose an appropriate blade for the material and specific cut
  • Adjust the blade tension according to manufacturer’s recommendations
  • Set the blade guides and thrust bearings to provide proper support and prevent blade deflection
  • Adjust the table height and tilt to match the desired angle of your cut
  • Ensure you are using the correct safety equipment, including eye and ear protection
  • When ready, steadily feed the material into the blade at a controlled pace, keeping fingers away from the blade at all times

How to change a bandsaw blade

Changing the blade involves a systematic process to ensure safe and efficient replacement. Typically, instructions will be found in the manufacturer’s instructions as procedures may vary from model to model, but the general process is as follows:

  • Disconnect the bandsaw from the power source
  • Loosen the tension on the existing blade by adjusting the tensioning knob or lever
  • Remove any blade guards or guide blocks to access the blade
  • Take note of the blades orientation before carefully slipping it off the wheels
  • Uncoil the new blade, making sure the orientation matches the old blade
  • Thread the new blade onto the wheels, ensuring it sits property in the pulley grooves
  • Adjust the tensioning according to the manufacturer’s recommendations
  • Reattach any blade guards or guide blocks
  • Reconnect the power and perform a test cut to ensure the blade’s alignment and tension is correct.
